Abstract

Global Protein Products, a Waterville-based company founded in 1996, has big hopes for Icein, a patented product made from zein, a corn protein. Global Protein's first product, PM233, made from Icein, talc, and pine bark, is a less-toxic potato seed treatment used before planting in order to create a seal and prevent seed loss. The company has received research and development grants from the Maine Technology Institute, including one that partnered them with the University of Maine to work on using Icein to make a low-fat french fry and a natural preservative that could be used instead of sulfites to prevent whole peeled potatoes from browning.
