Abstract
"Focus Real Estate/Construction/Design" piece on a trend, both in Maine and across the nation, toward newer, smaller, and more energy-efficient homes. During the last 40 years, the average U.S. home size increased 56% to over 2,500 square feet today. But between 2007-2010, the recession helped shrink the average home size to 2,381 square feet. And as one of the most oil-dependent states in the U.S., Mainers are looking for ways to reduce their home heating costs. In a state with one of the highest percentages of older residents, retirees and empty-nesters often consider downsizing to smaller homes.
