Abstract
"Capitol Update" piece on efforts to reduce and deter unemployment fraud. Maine now does weekly checks in a national new-hire database in addition to a state new-hire database to search for possible fraud. And a new bill has been introduced that would increase the penalties for unemployment fraud to up to 10 years in prison, fines of up to $20,000, and an increased period of time during which people could be disqualified from receiving unemployment benefits.
