Abstract

The pulp and paper industry is increasingly doing more business with foreign clients, especially Chinese clients. Instead of focusing solely on traditional paper products, companies, such as Sappi Fine Paper in Westbrook, are creating innovative paper products. One such product, known as "release paper", is made by creating textured paper that can be used to produce shoes, handbags, auto interiors, and other items. Sappi's Supply Chain Manager, Alan Blanchard, said that 85% of its products leave the United States and more than half of those go to Chinese clients. In order to stay ahead of competitors inside and outside of the United States, manufacturers need to invest in R&D, technology, and communication, which is key when working with clients from other countries who speak different languages.
