Abstract
"Focus Transportation & Trade" piece on renewed discussion and research into the development of an east-west highway in Maine. Several different routes have been proposed over time and the most recently proposed route would be from Calais to Coburn Gore. Peter Vigue, chairman and CEO of Cianbro, is leading efforts to utilize this route because it could use existing rights of way and the road could connect with existing highways to the Midwest and Canada once a 61-mile connecting road is built between Coburn Gore and Sherbrooke, Canada. Vigue also supports using a combination of private and public funds to create and operate the road. Supporters say that it could boost usage of Maine ports and increase exports but opponents are concerned about the environmental ramifications of a road going through one of the Northeast's oldest, undisturbed forests. Includes information about the history of the project over the past 50 years.
