Abstract

"Capitol Update" piece on a warning given by Maine's top law enforcement officials to the Legislature's appropriation committee about the increased costs of fighting crime, especially when fewer federal grants are available. Overtime and technology are often needed to solve complicated cases. For example, the recent approval for $360,000 to add three positions to the computer crime lab will only help prevent their backlog from growing but won't reduce its size.
