Abstract
"Focus Health Care" piece on Coastal Women's Healthcare's transition to an electronic records system. The system, which was implemented in phases four years ago, has increased efficiency and patient safety while also decreasing costs. Dr. Barbara Slager, president of the practice and a leading proponent of the electronic system, accepted an award on behalf of the practice from the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services for meeting "meaningful use" standards for technology. Almost a dozen other Portland-area practices have followed suit, propelling Maine into the forefront of health information exchanges.
