Abstract
Profile of Roger Milliken, the manager of Baskahegan, his family’s timber company. Milliken’s commitment to conservation has won him the respect of The Nature Conservancy. He convinced the company to hire Chuck Gadzik to be the resident forester. Gadzik introduced European sustainable harvesting techniques, something which did not always go over well with contractors, but which has helped sustain not only the forest but the company as well, protecting it from boom-and-bust cycles of traditional logging. Milliken’s work on the board of TNC is also examined, as well as his involvement in the often acrimonious disputes among the various stakeholders of the North Woods. Sidebar includes a timeline of highlights from Milliken’s life.
