Abstract

“Focus Human Resources/Benefit” piece on a new definition of “independent contractor” which went into effect on December 31. Prior to the new law, a worker could be classified as an employee under workers’ comp or as an independent contractor for unemployment taxes. The new, single definition clears up confusion and will help employers comply with the Affordable Care Act. With a checklist of criteria that must be met for a worker to be designated an independent contractor.
