Abstract

Piece on two pilot rebate programs offered by Maine’s electric companies to encourage customers to switch to electric heat. Bangor Hydro is pushing heat pump technology, while CMP is focusing on electric thermal storage, but both utilities emphasize the energy efficiency and cost savings of these new technologies. Although questions remain as to how well the heat pump system will work in very cold temperatures and whether the cost savings of using off-peak power for the thermal storage system will continue, these pilot programs offer options that could help lessen the state’s dependence on oil heat.
