Abstract

Maine’s boatbuilding industry, with the exception of a few craftspeople building traditional wooden boats, has embraced technology and diversification in order to stay afloat during tough economic times. The article discusses the closed-mold fabrication of composites which many boatyards have adopted as well as the challenges and opportunities presented by marine electronics. The state’s 57 boatbuilding companies employ 1,036 people and generated $271.4 million in sales in 2010.
