Abstract

“Focus: Technology” piece profiles Applied Thermal Science of Sanford, a company that is working to develop smaller, more affordable space vehicles. Karl Hoose, ATS’s president, explains the company’s use of air-breathing engines, which enable rockets to be 90% smaller and 85% lighter than conventional launch vehicles which must carry tons of fuel and liquid oxygen. Includes discussion of the challenges of securing funding after NASA’s budget was cut last year. With a sidebar on the market for small-scale satellites.
