Abstract

“Focus: International Trade” piece profiles Ocean Renewable Power Co., the Portland-based company behind the tidal power generator in Eastport. The TidGen power system was the first ocean energy project in the country to deliver power to an electric utility grid. The company recently launched a subsidiary in Chile. John Ferland, ORPC’s vice president of project development, explains that they were contacted by Chileans after a major earthquake alerted them to vulnerabilities in the grid. ORPC will be competing with major marine energy companies for Chile’s tidal energy pilot project, but president Chris Sauer believes that they expertise to compete. ORPC has also been contacted by other foreign companies seeking to develop their local and renewable energy sources. While responding to these inquiries, the company is also focused on developing and refining its tidal, wave, and river turbine units.
