Abstract

A look at Maine’s shortage of dentists. Two-thirds of the state’s dentists are over age 50, older than the national norm. Two new programs are hoping to fill the need for young, trained dentists: Maine Medical Center, Tufts University School of Dental Medicine in Boston and Community Dental are collaborating on a one-year program in dental care, and University of New England’s College of Dental Medicine which welcomed its first class of students in 2013. Looks at the challenge of recruiting people to work in rural areas, which are especially underserved.
