Abstract

The number one challenge for local businesses in greater Portland is lack of labor, due in part to the large number of baby boomers reaching retirement age, low birth-rates, and low rates of migration into the state. This article describes what some businesses are doing to attract junior and senior level workers. Strategies include partnering with colleges and secondary schools and providing scholarship and internships, offering referral bonuses, providing quality-of-work-life benefits, acquiring talent through acquisition, and tapping public resources like Portland’s business assistance program for job creation.
