Abstract

The author reflects that his recent hike up Mount Katahdin gave him time to think about the difficulties the region is facing in light of the paper mill closures and that tourism appears to be the most promising resource for generating income in the region. However, at present visitors are not drawn to the area in sufficient numbers to make up for the loss of jobs the paper mills provided. He concludes that either more must be done to promote the region, or the region should look to other ways in which to support itself.
