Abstract

Focus piece on Maine financial firms that have joined the conscious capitalism movement. The Portland Conscious Capitalism Community, founded by Tara Jenkins in 2018, now has about 50 members who believe that companies do not exist solely to make a profit. Numerous studies show that businesses driven by a higher purpose outperform their peers in terms of earnings and revenue. Steve Tenney, CEO of Great Diamond Partners and Kevin Hancock, CEO of Hancock Lumber, are among the Maine business people who are putting mission and values over profit.
