Abstract
Profiles of several farmers around the state who are finding creative ways to make a profit, in an industry where the average annual income for a Maine farmer is $16,958. Penny Jordan of Jordan's Farm in Cape Elizabeth and Ben Slayton of Farmers Gate Market in Wales have teamed up to open a year-round store. The Somali Bantu farmers of Lewiston-Auburn hired a marketing director and now sell their corn to the Portland school system and a Portland tortilla maker. These farmers hope to find more land for farming and also for traditional ceremonies. Karen Bolduc is planning a "treehouse sanctuary" to take advantage of the "glamping" trend and Ian Jerolmack of Stonecipher Farm in Bowdoinham switched from farmers' markets to selling directly to Portland restaurants.
