Abstract

Katahdin Region's economic development director Mike Elliott believes that economic growth for the area will come from individual entrepreneurs and small businesses and start-ups -- what he calls "micro-transformations." The article examines the opportunities, such as easy access to the outdoors, and the challenges, including a need to increase access to broadband. Lindsay and Mike Downing and their Mt. Chase Lodge are cited as an example of the type of entrepreneurs who are making their mark in the region. Sidebar about big projects that are also helping to boost the region, such as the redevelopment of two mill sites and the designation of an International Dark Sky Sanctuary.
