Abstract

A look at how careers in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) are critical for Maine's economic growth, with each direct STEM job supporting an indirect job. Even trades jobs, like welders and electricians, are grounded in STEM disciplines. Maine's challenge is finding skilled workers for these jobs, as STEM education lags behind the need. Maine trails other states in developing a workforce for jobs in science and engineering. The Department of Economic and Community Development is looking into ways to connect businesses and students.
