Abstract

A look at some Maine startups and how they are raising money from business-pitch contests like "Greenlight Maine" and "Elevating Voices" and others. Among the startups highlighted are Eliah Thanhauser's North Spore, a company that produces mushroom cultivation supplies; Michael Odokara-Okigbo's NKENNE, an African-language learning app; and Torey Penrod-Cambra's industrial software provider, HighByte. Sascha Deri, founder and CEO of bluShift Aerospace in Brunswick, has also tapped into pitch contests for funding, while also using crowdfunding sites and applying for grants. Jon Konsin, CEO of Biddeford-based Prapela, a medical technology startup that is working on a bassinet pad to help premature babies sleep, decided that he would rather pursue grants than pitch contests, and recently won a $50,000 grant from the U.S. Food & Drug Administration.
