Abstract
Survey of six Maine businesses that have weathered the recent hard times, often adapting their business models to survive the pandemic, and are looking ahead with hope for the future. The businesses featured are: Michael Friedland's The Lumbery in Cape Elizabeth which sources Maine lumber; Captains Justin Schaefer and Jocelyn Schmidt's J.&E. Riggin, a passenger schooner based in Rockland; May Hall's Slow Bell Cafe on Chebeague Island; the Machias River General Store, founded in 2019 by Gina and Harry Finn and Isaiah and Caissie Roberts; Byers and Sons Long Island Bakehouse, which Caitlin and Matthew Byers started just as the pandemic was ramping up; and Nor'easter Pound & Market, a restaurant and retail seafood market that Ronald Musetti and Adam Farley founded a year ago.
