Abstract

The Gulf of Maine Research Institute launched True Fin in 2019. The mission-driven company trains fishermen in specialized handling practices. They can then sell high-quality, sustainable fish to restaurants that were previously importing the same products from abroad. CEO Jen Levin describes best-handling practices which are based on a Japanese practice known as "ike jime." Brendan Landry, a True Fin employee, discusses how he connects with fishermen on the docks; he now has connections with about 60 boats. The company has grown from three employees to seven and is looking to hire more people.
