Abstract

An exploration of the need for attorneys in rural Maine. Discusses the causes of the dearth of rural lawyers, including the aging population of attorneys who are retiring faster than they can be replaced. Discusses the professional advantages and challenges for country lawyers, as well as the risks to the citizens of rural areas who cannot access needed legal services. Describes recruitment initiatives such as UMaine Law's Rural Law Fellowship Program, which pairs law students with mentors at rural law firms.
