Abstract

An overview of "exit strategy" options for business owners who are ready to retire or otherwise move on. Explores the ESOP, or Employee Stock Ownership Plan, which turns employees into shareholders; details the conversion of Day's Jewelers and Bull Moose into ESOPs. The option of selling one's business to an outside party is illustrated by the case of Sam's Italian Foods, which is now owned by venture-backed firm Teamshares.
