Abstract

A study of the work of the Maine Volunteer Lawyers Project, a group which connects people who struggle to secure legal representation with lawyers willing to work pro bono. Volunteer lawyers Dave Canarie and Allison Kuhns describe the work they have done for the project, particularly as members of its Domestic Violence Pro Bono Panel. Canarie and Kuhns note how lack of legal counsel can trap victims without the knowledge and funds to pursue action against their abusers. They also note the delays and unnecessary costs caused when people without lawyers try to navigate the court system alone.
