Abstract

Short article on the renovation of the Portland Public Library, last reported on in winter of 2004. The most striking features of the new design, drawn up by Portland architect Scott Simons, are its 75-foot-tall solar chimney and its 30-foot--high audiovisual "urban screen." The original recessed main entry and facade will be used as a cafe and other more active library services, and a transparent curtain wall will link the activity inside to the busy square outside.
