Abstract

The author is taken on a tour of the newly renovated Portland Public Library by Scott Simons of Simons Architecture, who shares the vision he was instrumental in achieving. With personal computers containing more information than most libraries, the new space reaches out to the public--with a cafe, art gallery, performance space, new meeting rooms, abundant light, visual access to the layout, more computers, self-checkout of books, multicultural signage, "information walls," and more. Not visible are substantial energy improvements. The transformation was accomplished with a very modest budget for a renovation of such magnitude.
