Abstract
Feature article on the job of canvassing door-to-door, with a focus on local efforts by the Sierra Club and the Maine People's Alliance (MPA). The MPA guarantees their canvassers at least $50 a day in base pay, plus a bonus for anything over $85 in donations. At the Sierra Club, canvassers must raise at least $450 a week to earn the base weekly salary of $275; anything lower than that, and the staffer takes home 35 percent of what he's raised. Mike Happe, MPA canvas director, said that the canvas as an educating tool pays for itself. Details.
