Abstract
"Diverse-city" piece on the excessive political correctness shown by the Portland Press Herald when it refused to print the euphemism, "the N-word," in a column the author wrote about someone using the racial slur against her. The paper also refused to use the word "squaw," in covering a story in which Native American Benjamin Humphrey pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the 2002 beating death of Canadian Derek Rogers, in Ocean Park. Rogers allegedly called Humphrey's sister a squaw, and Humphrey's sister faces a murder charge. The Press Herald used "derogatory name related to American Indian Heritage" to describe the motive for the killing.
