Abstract
Feature article reporting that if voters approve a casino on Nov. 4, it will become the only casino in America where smoking is banned. The ban will exist because Maine passed a new law that prohibits smoking in almost all indoor places, with no exception for the casino. The law goes into effect January 1. While many believe a no-smoking casino is doomed to failure, Erin Lehane, spokeswoman for the pro-casino Think About It, said the tribes would not ask the legislature for an exemption from the ban. An effort to repeal the law is already underway, led by John Michael. With additional comments by Dennis Bailey, manager of the anti-casino campaign, Casinos No!, and Judy Dorsey of the Maine Coalition on Smoking or Health.
