Abstract

"Cover Story" piece on a new brochure to be published by the state's Bureau of Health and designed to warn Maine residents about the health risks of eating fish caught in the state's inland waters because of mercury contamination. Based on new rules outlined in this year's handbook on fishing regulations, it actually represents a loosening of the state's fish-consumption advisory for pregnant women and others in the "sensitive" population. Activists throughout the state, including the Maine Toxics Action Coalition, are up in arms over the proposed advisory, charging that the state is risking the health of children and developing fetuses.
