Abstract
The lighting from the proposed casino resort in Sanford may disrupt viewing at the Starfield Observatory in Kennebunk, the home of the Astronomical Society of Northern New England (ASNNE). However, Rob Burgess, ASNNE president, believes that the organization can work with casino organizers to protect a dark night sky, something Chief Barry Dana of the Penobscots considers as a resource to be preserved. Erin Lehane, Think About It spokesperson, points out that the proposed site, near the Sanford Regional Airport, lies with FAA restrictions that control the amount of light near airports. Other ASNNE members worry the casino and ancillary development will emit enough light pollution to significantly disrupt star-gazing from the facility.
