Abstract
Chris O'Connor, 25, an openly gay assistant resident at the University of Southern Maine's (USM) Portland Hall, recently found threatening graffiti on the walls of the dormitory. USM police investigator Jim Stanhope says the graffiti is criminal and qualifies as a hate crime. A formal civil-rights complaint has been filed and last week more than 200 USM students, faculty, staff and others attended the Community Forum to End Hate and Intolerance to show their support for O'Connor.
