Abstract

"this just in" piece on the dramatically rising rate of HIV/AIDS in gay and bisexual men in Maine, noting that the Maine Bureau of Health has yet to pinpoint a reason for the spike. Gay and bisexual men now represent 71 percent of the HIV cases already reported this year, compared to 56 percent of cases in 2002, and 45 percent of cases in 2001. Charles Dwyer, the program director for the HIV/STD program at the Maine Bureau of Health, suspects that anonymous sex via the Internet, ineffective prevention messages, and the idea that AIDS in no longer a threat because of life-lengthening drugs, may be possible causes.
