Abstract
Article on the growing number of individuals and groups in Maine that are opposed to elements of the USA PATRIOT Act that they see as an erosion of civil liberties. Among the groups involved are Peace Action Maine, the People's Free Space, Maine Coalition for Peace and Justice, the Maine Civil Liberties Union, various local Bill of Rights Defense Committees, and Baseball Fans for Peace. Local informational meetings are the primary strategy for these groups. After a November civil-rights forum held in Waterville, the Waterville City Council passed an anti-PATRIOT Act resolution. On a state level, Rep. Deborah J. Hutton, D-Bowdoinham, and Sen. Ethan Strimling, D-Portland, have introduced similar resolutions.
