Abstract

Article on the potential dangers of dental mercury amalgams used to fill teeth, noting that the fillings have been linked to cases of chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, headaches and other health problems. But the American Dental Association (ADA) and Dr. Mark Zajkowski, an oral surgeon working in South Portland, maintain that mercury amalgams are safe. U.S. represenative Mike Michaud, D-Maine, is co-sponsor of a bill that would ban interstate commerce of mercury intended for use in dental fillings, effectively prohibiting mercury amalgams in the U.S. Other Maine citizens, like Pam Anderson of Houlton, are working on the local level to outlaw mercury amalgams. With additional comments by Dr. Joseph Py, a Doctor of Osteopathy, who believes the amalgams can lead to heavy metal poisoning.
