Abstract
Feature article on the paper industry in Maine, noting that after two decades of clear-cutting in which harvests exceeded tree growth, most of the old paper companies have sold their lands and mills and left the state. Bill Butler, a logger and activist in the short-lived Maine Woodsmen's Association, predicted the abandonment more than 20 years ago. With comments by Cathy Johnson, forestry-issue expert with the Natural Resources Council of Maine; Jonathan Carter, biologist, activist and former Green Party gubernatorial candidate; and Bill Butler.
