Abstract

Article discussing the ongoing dispute between Ted Wainwright of South Portland and Maietta Construction, over Wainwright Farms in South Portland. In January of 2000, the city of South Portland purchased the 150 acres from Wainwright, a former sod farmer, with the stipulation that no soil could be removed from the site. During the summer of 2002, Wainwright allegedly visited the site and witnessed Maietta Construction hauling topsoil off the property. Maietta Construction was hired by the city to develop the site into athletic fields. The Maiettas deny any wrongdoing, while Wainwright wants the city to sue. The topsoil, or loam, is valuable to developers and contractors.
