Abstract

"Politics and Other Mistakes" piece on Sen. Olympia Snowe, R-Maine, noting that she and the state's junior senator, Republican Susan Collins, are among a handful of "Senate unreliables," meaning they are most likely to cross the aisle and vote with Democrats. Since first being elected to the House of Representatives in 1978, Snowe has proved herself to be a maverick in the tradition of Margaret Chase Smith, regularly defying Republican leaders on social and environmental issues.
