Abstract
"Politics and Other Mistakes" piece on instant runoff voting (IRV), a voting procedure promoted last year in a bill by Rep Thomas Bull, D-Freeport. In IRV, instead of casting a ballot for your favorite candidate, you'd rank all candidates in order of preference. If nobody captures at least 50 percent of votes, the last-place finisher is eliminated, and those votes are distributed to the candidates designated as second choices.
