Abstract

"this just in" piece on four Portland-area businesses and organizations that received the Governor's Awards for Environmental Excellence: National Semiconductor, NorDx, the University of Southern Maine's Biodiesel Partnership, and the Washboard Laundry. Also included on the list of winners are what staff scientist Nick Bennet of the Natural Resources Council of Maine calls "disturbing" choices. Dragon Products of Thomaston is listed despite having never received a permit for a landfill that now contains around 800,000 tons of waste. International Paper's mill in Jay is also on the list, despite being one of the state's worst polluters.
