Abstract

Article on the tax reform debate in Maine, questioning the assumption that Mainers are among the most heavily taxed in the nation. Christopher St. John, head of the Maine Center for Economic Policy, claims that only a distinct minority of Maine taxpayers bear a significant tax load. Michael Allen, the state's chief tax economist, agrees with St. John that the tax load is lighter for middle-income taxpayers than for high- and low-income people.
