Abstract

"Politics and Other Mistakes" piece on a bill to legalize same-sex marriage, sponsored by Rep. Brian Duprey, R-Hampden. Hampden, a strong supporter of the Christian Civic League of Maine, says he introduced the bill on behalf of an anonymous constituent. Equality Maine, the state's leading gay-rights proponent, opposes the bill. Gov. John Baldacci has promised to introduce a gay-rights bill this session, and it is feared that the same-sex marriage debate will obscure the issue.
