Abstract

Detailed article on Harpswell inventor Lloyd Weaver, who has been working on an energy technology called syngas for 20 years. Syngas is what you get when you take organic material, usually coal, and subject it to intense temperatures and pressures while injecting water and oxygen to prevent it from actually burning. Weaver envisions his latest concept, called OptiGas/OptiSteel, to render biofuels and solid waste as well as coal. With comments by Beth Nagusky of the state Office of Energy Independence (OEI), and OEI energy-policy analyst Uldis Vanags.
