Abstract

Article on the Wal-Mart Corporation, with a focus on a review of the company for contesting an unreasonable amount of workers' compensation claims in its Wal-Mart and Sam's Club stores in Maine. Claims Management, Inc. (CMI) is the company owned and operated by Wal-Mart, through which the company self-administers its own workers' compensation insurance. According to Steve Minkowsky of the Maine Workers' Compensation Board, CMI is contesting almost 94 percent of the compensation claims filed by workers in its Maine stores and warehouses. Ed Gorman of the AFL-CIO office in Augusta called the workers' compensation issues part of Wal-Mart's continuing pattern of disrespect for workers and workers' rights.
