Abstract

"In the Lobby" piece on the legislative session that ended in June, noting that the Democratically-controlled Legislature accomplished little. The Legislature replaced its unpopular budget passed in March with a new budget that still featured service cuts, along with a $1-per-pack raise in the cigarette tax. Although a gay-rights bill was passed, it may face a people's veto in November. With commentary on efforts to change the referendum process, the proposed business court and challenges to basic corporate power.
