Abstract

Article on the Portland history community, with a focus on the amateur and semi-professional historians who compile and interpret the city's history. Many of those historians gather at the Maine Historical Society's library on Congress Street, sifting through piles of pictures, letters, and manuscripts. With brief profiles of: Bill Barry, local historian and a librarian at the Maine Historical Society; Matt Barker, a local Irish history specialist; Bill Hall, coordinator of the Portland History Docent training program; Robert Quatrano, caretaker of Neal Dow's home in Portland; and Brad Blake and Bill LaLiberte, docents at the Portland Observatory.
