Abstract

Article recapping a Portland Phoenix roundtable discussion on the future for Maine's gays and lesbians in light of a successful November 8 vote rejecting a referendum to overturn the inclusion of the term "sexual orientation" in the state's Human Rights Act. Of all the successes of the "No on 1" campaign, organizers and observers agree that the emergence of new activists is the most important. Participating in the roundtable discussion were Andrew Bossie, chair of the student senate at the University of Southern Maine; Sen. Ethan Strimling, D-Portland; Peter Chandler, chief of staff for Rep. Michael Michaud, D-Maine; Patricia Peard, attorney and founding member of Maine Won't Discriminate; and Noel Bonam, program coordinator of Portland's HIV/STD program and director of Thrive, a gay men's social group.
