Abstract

Lengthy, detailed article following up on allegations of abuse of inmates at the "Supermax," a 100-bed, solitary-confinement, maximum-security facility inside the Maine State Prison in Warren. Since the Portland Phoenix ran its investigative series four months ago, Supermax prisoner Deane Brown has been released into the general inmate population, though he is continuing a "medicine strike." In February, the Maine Civil Liberties Union threatened to sue the state to force improvement in the treatment of the mentally ill prisoners in the Supermax. Martin Magnusson, state corrections commissioner, has vowed that he would soon take specific steps to reform the Special Management Unit, as the Supermax is officially known.
